“Let It Stand” Rally Urges Utah Gov. To Recognized Gay Marriage

A rally at the Utah State Capital Friday drew 1800 people with petitions garnering 58,000 signatures urging Republican Gov. Gary Herbert to recognize marriage licenses issued to gay couples, according to the LA Times. gaymarriageThe assembly came in the wake of the announcement from US Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. that the US Government would honor the Utah licences issued between Dec. and Jan. In his statement, Holder said, “I am confirming today that, for purposes of federal law, these marriages will be recognized as lawful and considered eligible for all relevant federal benefits on the same terms as other same-sex marriages. These families should not be asked to endure uncertainty regarding their status as the litigation unfolds.” The rally included a heartfelt speech from 12 year old Riley Hackford-Peer, who’s mothers were married in December. He said, “Governor Herbert wants to treat my moms unfairly. He says he wants to protect families. But I want to tell him that my family deserves protection too. I have two moms. And I love them. And they deserve to have their marriage recognized everywhere.” See his electrifying speech here:
